Product Description

An interesting cultivar representing some variation within the rocambole camp.  It matures slightly later than other strains in this group.  According to author Ted Meredith, it gained attention when it won the distinction of being chosen by Cook’s Illustrated magazine as a favourite by America’s Test Kitchen in a comparative test with 8 other cultivars. We’re going to give it a test of our own on our farm.  We will continue to grow out this in the 2023 fall planting…we may have had too mild a winter in 2022 for this cultivar.  It is said to like a good cold snap in winter for best results.

Origins: In the Carpathian Mountains of southwest Poland

Description / Size:

Its leaves are fan shaped and more upright when compared to others in the rocambole variety. There is not a tendency for the tips of the leaves to curl downwards as in other cultivars. The bulb wrappers can show a copper coloured striping accompanied by a violet blush. Cloves peel exceptionally easily, which is part of the reason for their shorter storage life.

Flavour / Heat:

Excellent rich, sweet and engaging.

Storage: 3-5 months

Growing Info: Requires a cold winter ‘snap’ and may not grow well in warmer climates. It does not like ‘wet feet’, consider doing a raised bed if planting in clay soil.

Availability: Sold out for 2023
